My Story
My name is Jan and I am a Chinese immigrant who came to Australia from Shanghai 26 years ago.
Always curious, I started backpacking around China after leaving school, at a time when there were few other tourists. I visited many unforgettable places and met many remarkable Chinese people, but most of these were ‘just passing through experiences…
Later, the same inquisitiveness lured me to Australia. But instead of just passing through this time, I met a tall, good-humoured and fascinating man named Geoffrey – so fascinating that I went on to marry him and have lived in Sydney ever since!
My husband has that very Australian attitude of ‘let’s give it a go’ in all areas of life: be it rock climbing, camping and outback exploration, playing music or sport, wine tasting, adventurous eating, he is a willing participant…
Although as a Chinese woman I was brought up to be cautious and conservative, in Geoffrey’s company, I have enjoyed many new experiences. In particular, bushwalking and exploring the wilderness have become important parts of our life together.
These days more and more Chinese tourists are visiting Australia. Seeing them arrive in large numbers on bus tours, I always think what a waste of money and time it is to travel without ever getting to know the places they visit. Since living here, I have come to appreciate what makes life in Australia so completely new and exciting for any visitor from China. This inspired my idea to run in-depth cultural tours for Chinese travellers who share my curiosity about Australia. After acting as guide to groups of friends and family, I decided to apply some of Geoffrey’s attitude and make my idea happen!
I aim to pave the way for travellers who are interested in more than the typical ‘stamp collection’ tourist experience – where each landmark is just a point on a map to be ticked off. My customers want to understand at least a little of the amazing cultural and natural phenomena that make up the “sunburnt country” that I have come to love. By preferring to serve small tour groups, I can grasp what is most important to each of my customers. I then work with local partners to help turn those holiday dreams into reality. Fluent in both English and Chinese and familiar with both cultures, I can help you to understand Australians, and ensure Australians understand you, your requirements and your concerns.
My tours can be stimulating and exciting, but if you are just looking for peace and quiet I can also lead you to the perfect places to break away from modern living – where you can wake up to hear gentle bird songs, see rare animals and smell flowers blooming in their natural environment.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you find an Australia you never knew existed.
澳大利亚的说法 ’Let’s give it a go’, 中文可以译成 ’让我们试一下’.
